The Basics of Blackjack

Blackjack is a game of chance played between a player and a dealer. Players attempt to beat the dealer by getting a hand value that is closer to 21 than the dealer’s. The game can be played with a single deck of cards or with two or more decks.

A blackjack table typically contains two or more decks of 52 cards. Each card has a specific value, either one or 11 depending on the card’s face value. Cards from 2 to 10 count as a face value while cards from 11 to 19 are valued as a number.

There are many side bets available in blackjack. One of the most popular is the insurance bet. It costs a half of your initial wager and pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Another is the early surrender. This is when a player surrenders half their bet before the dealer checks. However, the payout is not as high as the insurance bet.

There are four kinds of blackjack to choose from. Some are multi-hand while others are single-hand. The minimum bet varies from one casino to the next. In the case of multi-hand games, the rules are more complicated. Generally, the minimum bet is printed on the sign on the Blackjack table.

If you are playing in a casino, the house has a statistical advantage over you. To counter this, you can buy insurance. Insurance costs 50% of your bet and protects you from the house’s edge. You may also want to consider taking extra cards. Although the cost of this option is significant, it can pay off in the long run.

The best possible hand in Blackjack is called a Natural. Typically, this is a hand of ace and ten. A second best hand is a pair of eights. Even if the dealer has a blackjack, the player wins if he has a Natural because the house pays 3:2 on this bet.

If the dealer has an ace up, you can play the Insurance bet. In this case, the bet is on the Queen instead of the King. Depending on the rules of the casino, the payout can be as much as twice the original bet.

Aside from the Insurance and Early Surrender options, players can take more cards if they choose. They can also stand. Taking more cards is a good idea when the remaining cards are advantageous to the player. Stand, or standing on a natural is a good way to stay in the game, especially if the hand is a resounding bust.

The other most important blackjack trick is to understand the odds. For example, if the point total is 11, the player will need to hit on an ace or a ten. Assuming the dealer has a face card, the player’s best bet is to hit on an Ace. Similarly, the worst hand in Blackjack is a 16. Using basic strategy, you can determine when to hit and when to stand.
